Dry stone walling is an ancient tradition here in the Cotswold's, in olden times it was used to clear stone from arable fields so that crops would grow better and was then used to create divides between fields to keep stock in – or out!

These walls as well as dividing the fields also provided valuable shelter for livestock in harsh weather, before the use of modern field shelters, who sheltered behind the wall.

In modern times wire fences have taken over in most areas due to ease and cost, dry stone walling is an art/skill and requires training and practice, therefore a meter of dry stone walling costs in excess of £100, whereas a meter of modern post and rail fencing with stock wire costs around just £8 per meter. So more and more dry stone walls are being replaced as they fall down with modern post and rail fencing changing the landscape entirely.

However here at Notgrove we like to keep these old skills alive and sustain the Cotswold National Landscape, we have many stone walls and we repair them as and when they fall down.

This year we were approached by Richard Grey, a member of the Dry Stone Walling Association, who leads dry stone walling course for those wishing to improve their skills or those wishing to learn a new skill. He is using our walls to teach his courses so it was a win win for both of us.

The first course was held this weekend and here is the before and photo of what they achieved – full marks from us! We have courses running throughout the year and welcome everyone from beginners to improvers, for more information please see our website notgroveholidays.com/activities/dry-stone-walling-course/

Do you remember him and uncle Joe playing football for the NATS.

They also provide invaluable linear habitats and improve biodiversity. Well done Notgrove!

Love to see this. Reminds of my father who did dry stone walling around the Slaughters.

💕 Wedding Season Is Upon And The Hen Do's Are Underway 💕

We offer the safari tents for an alternative hen weekend - laid back, chilled out time away with special friends.

We had a lovely hen group staying in the tents this weekend - they had a brilliant chilled weekend with a few adventures (and glasses of wine) and have kindly said we could share it with you 💕

"I just wanted to say a massive thank you for allowing us to have the most amazing weekend. It has to be one of the best hen do’s we have all been on and it wouldn’t have been possible without your amazing facilities. Your safari tents are beautifully clean, spacious and practical. It was lovely having the log burner inside and an actual hob to cook on. We all couldn’t believe how amazing the showers were. They were so clean, hot and powerful. The grounds are simply stunning, and the staff so helpful and friendly and obviously the dog Mable topped the weekend off.

Thank you again, we would definitely recommend your facilities and grounds.

Many thanks

Hollie and the hen do group"

It was a total pleasure to have you Hollie and we hope the wedding is a wonderful day 😍💕🌟
